This coffee was produced by Roberto Belarmino Contreras Rodriguez at his 3.5 acre family farm Finca Genesis located in Las Flores vicinity in the famous Santa Barbara coffee region. The farm with altitude of 1550 is surrounded by a tropical rainforest which creates unique microclimates for the coffee trees to grow. After harvest, the cherries are washed at the Peña Blanca mill. Then they go through carefully monitored fermentation that takes 12 – 15 hours and are solar dried. Roberto is one of Honduras’ many independent smallholders and has been growing coffee for over 20 years.
Honduras is the largest producer of coffee in Central America and one of our all time favourite coffee producing nations. Close to 28% of the population is working in the industry. Coffee is truly a collective effort here. Some of the challenges producers have to deal with are heavy rainfall that hinders effective drying and the wide-spread corruption and smuggling coffee to Guatemala in search for higher prices. Our wish is to support the hard working small holders so they can connect with better partners owning drying mills and processing stations.
IHCAFE, Honduras’ coffee board, organized growers into six regions with specific varieties: Copán, Agalta, El Paraíso, Comayagua, Opalaca and Montecillo. Finca Genesis falls under the Copán region, famous for its strong sweet, chocolate and citric notes and heavy, creamy body. Thanks to the institute, farmers get promotion online and can learn more about best practices. Roberto works closely with the researchers to ensure only the highest quality of his crops. He was rewarded for his efforts when he won the 19th place in the 2017 Honduras Cup of Excellence with Finca Genesis Lot 19.
