A smooth body and complexity of sugars make this naturally processed coffee from Ethiopia's renowned Guji region a fantastic all-rounder, easy to drink everyday.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Gizaw Alemayehu operates a number of washing stations together with his wife Frehiwot. They have fine-tuned their expertise in handling the medley of hand-picked coffee delivered to their mills by hundreds of small holders living in and around Oakato village.

Guji Oakato's unique, slightly deeper “jammy” notes of blueberry jam and dark chocolate are your special treat on our single origin menu.

The Guji region is excellent for farming. As much of the land was an untouched forest, the soil is incredibly fertile. There is little need for added fertilizer here. As one coffee farmer puts it, “the default here is organic.”

Before 1974, Gizaw’s father produced coffee on his farms. When the socialist government took power and nationalised the land, the family lost them all. Young Gizaw did not see any future in farm ownership due to the harsh government policies, and shifted his focus to coffee processing. He now runs a number of washing stations, pursuing a modern approach to processing coffee.

Guji Oakato handpicked cherries
Guji Oakato African drying beds

Over 350 local farmers handpick and sort the ripe cherries before delivering them to Gizaw’s washing station where they are sorted into grades using density channels.

For this lot, the cherries go through the natural process, drying on raised beds for 4 weeks intensifying the delicious fruit character in the cup. Beyond producing delicious, high quality coffees, Gizaw and Frehiwot’s business is having broader impact within the community of small holder growers: they provide early payment for their harvest, agronomy support and an ad-hoc ambulance service for the locals.
